Barbara Gallaher Reed, 81, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026.
Born on January 26, 1945, in Buckhannon, West Virginia, Barbara was the daughter of G. R. “Bob” and Rosetta “Rose” Gallaher.
Barbara spent her early childhood in Doortown before moving to Back Fork of Elk in her childhood. She would sometimes point out that she had indoor plumbing before her husband, Fred — though not before earning herself a little notoriety by throwing her daddy’s baseballs into the outhouse during a determined act of childhood defiance.
Barbara married the love of her life, L. F. “Fred” Reed, and together they built a life centered around family, hard work, and resilience. Early in their marriage, they lived in Webster Springs, then Sutton, before moving to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, where Barbara was a stay-at-home mother.
In 1978, the family returned home to West Virginia and settled in Summersville, where Barbara began a long career with Nicholas County Bank. Through its many names and changes over the years, Barbara remained a familiar and trusted face until her retirement. She genuinely enjoyed working with the public and helping people.
After retirement, Barbara enjoyed reading, watching wildlife, traveling, spending time with her family, and especially visiting with her grandsons. Eventually she found her second home on Bull Run in Braxton County, where she loved the peace and quiet of country life.
Anyone who knew Barbara knew she was quiet, practical, and strong-willed. Kids behaved around her — and most adults did too. Though separated by miles from her grandsons, she loved following their activities both in academics (which was always a major focus of hers) and sports, especially baseball.
Barbara will be remembered for her strength, sharp wit, loyalty to family, and the unmistakable presence she carried wherever she went. She leaves behind stories, laughter, and memories that will remain with those who loved her.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Reed; her son, Steven, and wife MacKinlee (Normandy Park, WA); and her grandsons, Kessler, 18, and Callan, 13.
A celebration of life will be held in Summersville on July 18th. Time and venue will be published in the paper when they are finalized.
White-Anderson Funeral Home and Cremation Center at Summersville is in charge of the arrangements.
