Charles Phelps Tucker, 81, of Poe, WV, transitioned to his heavenly home on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Summersville Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
He was a faithful husband, a loving father, and a fun and silly grandfather. Charles was born to James “Phelps” and Annadouglas “Ann” Haithcoat Tucker in Hughes Creek (Kanawha County) on September 19, 1941. He moved to Nicholas County with his family to live on a farm in Sparks. Charles graduated from Nicholas County High School and spent two years serving in the United States Army.
In 1969 he married Peggy Sue Hypes. Charles and Peggy had two children, Heidi and James “Jimmy”. Being parents was a great joy to them, and getting to be grandparents was a very special blessing. Charles was a Christian and loved the Lord; he attended Bethel Church faithfully until some health problems hindered his attendance. Charles worked as a mechanic mostly, and he was a contract bus driver. His most important job (that he did very well) was being a “Mr. Mom” to his children that were born later in his and Peggy’s life. He enjoyed farming, gardening, tinkering on flathead engines, working on cars, and collecting junk. We are certain he had in his possession everything he’s ever owned; if you ever tried to buy something from him you’d understand! Charles had an interesting sense of humor that many often had trouble figuring out!
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Little “Eartley” and Byron “Lee”. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; daughter Heidi (James) Skaggs of Poe; son James (Julie) Tucker of Ansted; two grandchildren Charles “Charlie” and Anna; two brothers, John of Jamestown, PA, and Scott (Barbara) of Keslers Cross Lanes; three sisters, Susan Taber (Frank Quattro) of Lost River, Sally Ricottilli of Belington, and Naomi “Kay” Holley of Keslers Cross Lanes; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Bethel Cemetery in Poe on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at noon with Rev. Paul Gray officiating. White Funeral Home in Summersville is serving the family.
