On December 8, 2023, our precious mother departed her earthly walk to enter her eternal walk with our lord and savior. Dorma Jean Straley was born at her home in WV on March 6, 1938, to Della June and Cecil Shaver. Both of whom were awaiting her arrival to the pearly gates.
Dorma lived a life of service to Christ. She was a Baptist by faith and made sure she, along with her daughters, were in church if the doors were open. Little Union Baptist Church was her church home and one of her most treasured places to be. For many years, Dorma made Craigsville, WV her home until 2019 when she moved to Georgetown, KY. Dorma was an avid traveler declaring she would do her best to ensure she and her daughters were able to see the world; she definitely made quite the progress on that.
On May 1, 2012, Dorma’s most treasured blessing, besides her daughters, entered the world. Her grandson, Brady, became the light of her life. She would move heaven and earth for that boy.
Over the years, Dorma taught school in Nicholas and surrounding counties. She also had several opportunities to work with homebound students which she always enjoyed. She was a faithful supporter of the Lumberjack Express when her daughters were in the band.
On December 28, 1958, Dorma married the love of her life, Ellis Wilson. Unfortunately, Ellis preceded Dorma in death on December 15, 1968. In April 1972, Dorma married Earl Leander Straley. Together, the two of them brought two daughters into the world; both who remain on this earth to carry on her legacy. Angela (Michael) Fields and Leigh Ann (Timmie) LeMay. She is also survived by her grandson, her pride and joy, Brady Fields.
Dorma is also survived by her sisters Patricia Ann Bragg and Sandra Sue Shaver and her brother, Roger Dale O’Quinn. She also has several nieces and nephews on both the Straley and the Adkins/O’Quinn side of the family. Finally, she also leaves behind three broken hearted kitties, Ming Meow, Socks and Colors Myrtle.
Friends may call on Friday, December 15, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. at White Funeral Home, Summersville, WV. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 2 p.m., at Little Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tyler Long. If you know mom, you know she didn’t miss a service Tyler preached. His beautiful wife, Ashley will be singing songs mom loved.
Dorma always loved flowers. One thing she always wanted was a room full of flowers at her funeral. So please, if you so feel inclined, bring on the flowers.
Matthew 25:23: His lord said unto him, well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, i will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
