Rufus Eugene “Buck” Smathers, Jr., 75, of Summersville, WV passed away at his home with his loving wife by his side on Thursday, January 5, 2023. Born May 7, 1947 at Waynesville, NC, he was a son of the late Rufus Eugene and Mae S. Smith Smathers.

He was a Baptist by faith, a US Army veteran, a retired paint contractor, and a salesman in Myrtle Beach, SC. He loved to motorcycle ride, he loved all sports, and was an avid Duke fan.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Faye Smathers; two daughters, Tonya Smathers of NC and Tara Sheppard of NC; one son, Josh Smathers of NC; two stepsons, Mike Jones of VT and Gary Jones of WV; his sister, Teresa Hood of NC; seven grandchildren.

In keeping with his wish he will be cremated and no services will be held at this time.

White Funeral Home at Summersville is in charge of the arrangements.
